Physical Education at St Mary’s is based around providing opportunities to explore, excel and achieve in a number of different sports and activities. As a department, we encourage full participation from all of our students as PE not only provides them with the opportunity to be physically active, but also allows them to develop leadership and team work skills.

The school’s excellent facilities include three gymnasia, 10 outdoor tennis courts, 6 netball courts, 4 rounders pitches, a hockey pitch and an athletics track and field event areas.  Sports on offer include hockey, netball, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, rounders and athletics. Teams represent the school at the highest level in Netball, Tennis, Hockey, Rounders, Cross Country Running, Athletics and Swimming in every year group from Year 4. For details of our sports fixtures please see the Events Calendar.

Girls are also prepared for County Trials and a significant number of our girls represent the county in their chosen sport, including netball, hockey, gymnastics, swimming and athletics.  We also support pupils who want to take their sporting talents to the highest level, ensuring they balance their school life with their demanding training schedules.

Most recently, one of our Sixth Formers, Emily Lewis, who is on the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) and hopes to represent Great Britain in kayaking at the Olympics in 2016, combined her sporting success with academic success, gaining As in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

We offer a range of additional extra-curricular sporting opportunities, including the highly popular Equestrian Club and our Equestrian Team came 5th place in the Team Dressage event at the National Championships earlier this year.

Girl jumping

We offer exam based study at both GCSE and A level which complements the practical elements of this subject and by the time the girls enter Sixth Form we provide them with opportunities to sample other sports, ranging from golf to sailing.

As part of our leadership programme, the school has a sports council made up of representatives from each year group. The Sports Council works towards promoting and developing the sporting opportunities at St Mary’s.
