About St Mary's

Letter from the Head

As the new Headmistress of St Mary’s, I have already been impressed by the quality and sense of purpose the girls at St Mary’s display in their studies and by the dedication of the teaching staff who work hard to draw out the gifts of each pupil, from the early years to the sixth form.

St Mary’s enjoys a rich heritage and traditional love of learning for its own sake. Yet it combines this with a forward thinking approach, determined to prepare our girls for the challenges of university and beyond.

High-calibre teaching staff and small class sizes ensure effective teaching and maximum attention. This enables us to recognise a girl’s ability and to develop and extend learning and understanding, not in competition with others, but in order to fulfil each individual's potential.

St Mary’s is a Christian school which welcome girls from all faiths into our inclusive school community. The quality of our spiritual, moral and social values is evident in the girls who display a unique caring spirit for their community and their world.

A St Mary's girl is her own person. She is valued for herself and her opinions are respected. She will be enabled to develop the skills required to become an independent thinker well able to deal with the challenges of the world beyond school.

A St. Mary’s girl will attain high academic standards but she will also enjoy and excel at an exceptional range of extra-curricular activities from horse riding to golf, from touring with the choir in Ireland to playing Hockey in Barbados!

In this sense, we are all about educating a girl for life, by developing her intelligence in the broadest possible way. Girls leave us with the necessary confidence and academic and social accomplishments to pursue a diverse range of careers and, most importantly, to live a happy and fulfilled life.

The achievements of our former pupils, whether it be heading up a team at Reuters, leading troops in Iraq or working creatively in the fields of architecture, fashion design or the theatre, are testimony to the effectiveness of the St Mary’s particular brand of single-sex education.

There is certainly something about St Mary’s and I would be delighted to give you a tour of the school so that you can experience at first hand this very special atmosphere.

Headmistress

"The school is a happy, generous spirited and respectful community in which pupils certainly feel valued, and in which their self-esteem can grow......From the youngest upwards, pupils are supportive of each other and are considerate."
