Ten things you probably didn't know about sleep


  • The longest someone has ever been asleep is 18 days 21 hours and 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon.

  • If it takes less than 5 minutes to fall asleep it means you have napped too little. It should take you between 10 - 15 minutes.

  • New born babies can take away 400-750 hours of their parents sleep.

  • In 1998 scientists proved that if a bright light is shone on the back of a person’s knees it can reset our habit of our waking up time. This is still unexplainable.

  • Ducks, to avoid being eaten by predators, can have half of its brain awake and half asleep.

  • Teenagers need as much sleep as young children, about 10 hours.

  • Women need more sleep than men; because they usually don’t get it, which is why they’re seen as more hormonal.

  • Rapid eye movement occurs about 2 hours a night. It usually starts 90 minutes into your sleep.

  • ‘Cat napping’ is where you sleep with your eyes open.

  • It’s could be possible that not one moment of our sleep is ‘dreamless’.
