Kevin Maher, reporter for The Times, has written a biased article based on his opinions of the internet.
‘The internet will produce nothing less than a new generation of surface skimming morons.’
Kevin Maher states that the internet has completely transformed the human race. It was only a few years ago when information could solely be collected from libraries and books. Yet now, information is so easy to obtain just by ‘Googling’ it. However, a disadvantage of the internet is that it can produce false and unreliable information.
Google is one of the most popular search engines. Nowadays, many people use Google to find information for a certain purpose. However, Google started in the late 1990s and at first was a very simple search engine. Most people did not use Google then, as they found information from the library.
Going to the library is a pleasanter way of finding information, some believe, as it is enjoyable to sit at the library with friends and search through information together. Books also tend to have more reliable information, as a book cannot be published without being thoroughly checked through and edited. Books also have something that appeals to people that the internet does not have; they have a more realistic feeling, whilst the internet almost seems otherworldly. The internet cannot be treasured in the same way as a good book can.
Yet the internet is more convenient as information can quickly be obtained without having to go to too much effort. It is also easy to tell if a source is reliable without having to read or search through everything.
Miss Holwill has expressed her views on the internet. She claims that the internet does have few good points but many disadvantages:
“The internet is useful, but it can only go so far. It is easy to copy and paste and not really need the information,”
She has also expressed her views on books:
“Books are great, because you can open and look at several at a time. I think it is quicker to find specific information and you can flip back and forth with a book. I believe it is actually easier to read a book rather than a screen.”
